Character Description Video

Please watch this video clip to support you with your literacy homework. It is all about character description.

Exciting times!

We have had a fantastic first week back to the spring term and have been incredibly busy!

We have started our new topic for this term, Invaders and Settlers. We will be specifically looking at the Anglo-Saxon as well as the Viking invasions and the impact they had on the kingdoms and their way of life. Our science will be looking at materials and their properties.

We are very excited to have purchased Lego Wedo, which introduces children to basic programming and allows the children to explore, design and build  programmable models which have the scope to be used in science too!

You can have a look at a short video of one of the children’s rovers by accessing the app Seesaw and scanning the QR code below.

Finally, could I ask that you encourage your child to read regularly. Your child’s reading record has a useful sheet which will enable you to ask your child questions that go beyond the literal and develop their deeper understanding of the text and the author’s intent.

Thank you all for your continued support.

So far this term…

The first half of the autumn term is coming to an end. It has been a busy time with the pupils getting used to the demands of the year 5 curriculum and I must say, they have worked incredibly hard!

In literacy, we have been writing persuasive texts as well as non-chronological reports. We have already written a report on the Athenians (part of our Ancient Greece topic) and we are about to write our next report on the Spartans. Watch this space for some examples of our writing.

In maths, we have been learning to measure angles and to find missing angles around a point. Look out for homework on this area of maths.

Here are some great websites for practicing these skills.

Measuring angles activity – this one gives you angles to measure using an electronic protractor

Measuring angles activity – this one allows you to drag the lines, create your own angles and then measure

Measuring angles activity – this one includes lots of different activities for you to choose from

I would like to ask that you continue to encourage your child to continue to learn their times tables to 12 X 12. Once these are secure, your child will find the whole maths curriculum much easier to access. I appreciate your support in this area.

In PE we we have been working on some Olympic dancing. We used images representing many Olympic and Paralympic sports as a stimulus for making shapes and movements. We explored these and put them into a dance.

Welcome back

We hope you had a wonderful summer and welcome you back to school.

Year 5 is an exciting, but extremely busy year and we very much appreciate your support as we work hard to ensure that pupils are prepared for their final year at Downfield School next year.

Key notices:

  • Swimming for 5V will be after October half term and will run until the end of term.
  • P.E. is on Thursdays and will be outdoor for as long as we can manage! Please make sure that pupils have a plain white t-shirt, green shorts or black tracksuit bottoms and outdoor trainers. As the weather gets colder, a black jumper/ tracksuit top would be advisable.  Pupils should have indoor plimsolls at school should we need to do P.E. indoors.
  • Please ensure that all coats, bags, uniform and P.E. kit are clearly labelled. In Year 5, pupils are expected to take care of their own belongings and so labelling saves a lot of time!
  • Homework, including spellings, will be given out on a Friday and will be due in by the following Wednesday. Please see the sheet stuck in your child’s Homework Book for more information. Children will be tested on their spelling words every Wednesday.
  • Please ensure that your child is wearing the correct uniform to school. You can find more information about the school uniform on the School Uniform link on the Home page. Please note: Girls should have long hair tied up and should not be wearing brightly coloured, fancy hair accessories.

We look forward to continuing to work together with the children and their families and to a fantastic year ahead!
