Governors are a vital part of our school. The Governors bring a range of experiences and skills from many walks of life. They work as a team to ensure that the pupils in Downfield are given the best possible education in order to achieve their full potential. One of the key priorities is raising the standards of our school.
The role of the governing body is to support the head teacher and staff in ensuring that our children receive a high standard of education in a supportive and inclusive environment. In practical terms, this means making decisions with regard to a wide range of policies and tracking the progress and direction taken by the school. The actual day to day running of the school is the responsibility of the head teacher. The full governing body meets once each term in addition to which all governors are attached to a number of subcommittees which meet one to three times a year.
The main committees are:
Finance and Personnel
Premises, Health and Safety
Chair of Governors: Dr D Spratt
Vice Chair : Mr P Maiden
Headteacher: Miss S Goldsmith,
Parent Governors: Mr M Best, Mr C Ijeoma
Staff Governors: Miss M Matthews, Mrs D O’Reilly
Local Authority Governors: Mrs U Lowry
Community Governors: Mr N Pope, Mr S Swain
Clerk: Mr H Ellis

The governors work closely with the Head Teacher and staff, undertaking visits to school on a regular basis to assist us in their understanding of what goes on. Governors usually serve for four years and are given appropriate training to prepare them for the job they do.
The governors may be contacted via the school office. We warmly welcome your comments and your involvement with the governing body.
If you are interested in joining the governing body or would like to find out more information, please do not hesitate to come and talk to us. You may also find the following website of interest as it has more information about the role and responsibilities: www.governornet.co.uk
